Protect Yourself Against Phishing
What is “phishing”?
“Phishing” is a type of e-mail fraud in which criminals pose as a legitimate company to lure you to a fake website. The intent of the fraud is to get you to share your confidential financial and personal information such as credit card account numbers, Social Security number, or passwords. Armed with this information, the criminal can gain unauthorized access to your accounts, or use your identity.
Typically, the phishing e-mail threatens you with dire consequences if you do not take immediate action.
Tips to protect yourself
Be suspicious of and do not respond to any e-mail that:
- Asks you to confirm, verify, or renew you account, billing information, or credit card numbers
- Requires you to enter personal information into an e-mail or submit it to another web site
- Claims that your account will be suspended or closed if you do not take the action requested immediately
- Requests your participation in a survey where you must enter personal information
- Indicates that there is unauthorized activity or charges on your account and requests your personal information for confirmation
- Solicits your User ID, account numbers, or password on a non-secure web site or e-mail
